Easy Homemade Enchilada Sauce

I love this sauce. It is cheaper than store-bought sauce and doesn't have the bitter taste.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 teaspoons canola oil
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 ounces tomato paste 1/3 cup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together chili powder, oregano, onion powder, cumin, and garlic powder. Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together cornstarch, stock, tomato paste, brown sugar, salt and pepper set aside.
  • Heat oil in a 3-quart sauce pan over medium heat; add seasonings and stir constantly until fragrant (about 1 minute).
  • Pour in the liquids and whisk to combine; increase heat to medium-high long enough to bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until thickened, stirring as needed.
